Final Project Outline

I would like each of you to explore Pop culture as it affects the world today. I don’t want this to be a history of pop culture from beginning to today as a timeline isn’t the point of this project. Instead, delve into the topics that are contained in the definition of “pop Culture”. Tell me what they are, why they are, how’d they originate individually, who created them, what part of the world did they first “pop”???

There are literally dozens and dozens of subjects that can be considered pop culture. Tell me which ones you like? Paparazzi? Technology? Music? Art? Movies? What aspects of pop culture revolve around you, and what aspects are you attracted to…and why?

You can be as specific to one aspect of Pop culture: The iPod/iTunes as a revolution for music distribution/listening

Or, explain something on a whole: Paparazzi, for example…why is this so important to people today?

You all live in a world that is completely dominated by pop culture, tell me about that world as you see it from your eyes.

Definition: Pop culture finds its expression in the mass circulation of items from areas such as fashion, music, sport and film.

Wikipedia Definition: Popular culture (or pop culture) is the widespread cultural elements in any given society that are perpetuated through that society’s vernacular language or lingua franca. It comprises the daily interactions, needs and desires and cultural ‘moments’ that make up the everyday lives of the mainstream. It can include any number of practices, including those pertaining to cooking, clothing, consumption, mass media and the many facets of entertainment such as sports and literature. (Compare meme.) Popular culture often contrasts with a more exclusive, even elitist “high culture,” that is, the culture of ruling social groups.. Pop culture finds its expression in the mass circulation of items from areas such as fashion, music, sport and film. The world of pop culture has had a particular influence on art from the early 1960s on, through Pop Art. When modern pop culture began during the early 1950s, it made it harder for adults to participate . Today, most adults, their kids and grandchildren “participate” in pop culture directly or indirectly.

4/24: Revised outline to include Audio Clips (Have them collected, time stamped and included in your revised outline, this includes music too. 4 pages written copy in total (5 points) Have full script ready for recording your voice audio as well as all music you plan to use in Mp3 form or on CD. 5 points

5/1: No assignment

5/5: All voice recordings to be completed and edited in full; all clips to be pulled and converted into Mp3; All music cut and saved as Mp3. BY TODAY, YOU SHOULD BE RUNNING FULL PRODUCTION AND HAVE A LARGE AMOUNT OF YOUR PROJECT STARTED/COMPLETED. (10 points)

Due at the beginning of class: a one page (FULL PAGE) outline of your talking points for this project. Please include the list of things I listed on the post below as they pertain to your project and be specific about what aspects of the genre you’re going to be discussing. This be a well thought out description of how you’re going to put this project together and remember to think about what music and sounds you want to include in your project and how you want to incorporate them. This will be the beginning of your content which will segue into how the project gets produced. This will be the basis for the insertion of your sounds/music and how the project will flow so it is very important to do great research and narrow your topics so they’re concise and match what you’re going to incorporate into them. Music Genre Project: This is a project that’s going to be very production based and will rely on the things you’ve learned in audacity up to this point. As we did with the commercial production projects, I will be requiring a mix of written assignments that will outline and explain your projects, as well as audio submissions so I know where you stand with your voice recordings and sound actualities (sound bites) so we don’t come up on the deadline and are missing anything.

What I want included in these projects:

- Background/history on the genre

- Key players, innovators, “fathers/mothers” of the genre

- How your genre has transitioned from it’s beginning to where it is today and who has embraced past music genres in their music today

- What you think of the genre from the start, to the end of the project

Effects you’ll be using: Amplify, Pitch, tempo, compressor, echo, fade in/out, noise removal, looping, cuts, cross fades

Specifics required for the project:

 -Projects will be between 8-10 minutes. (no less/more please) 

-7 strong effect – 8 songs from your genre 

- 5 voice clips, sound bites, interviews, DVD clips, CD sounders

 - Also, none of the above can be longer than 10 seconds without your voice being over them. This is going to feature your vocal recordings as much as your additional sounds.

Project 2 Assignment #2

On Tuesday, March 3rd, you will be verbally presenting ALL of your advertisers to the class, similar to what I did today. You need to have all 5 ready and broken down to the specifics we’ve talked about in class thus far. This should seriously be NO LESS than a page per advertiser. There is a lot of information that you need to include, and in the planning stage, more is always better in this case. I also want you to bring full scripts for each advertiser, you’ll be reading 2 of these for the class to coincide with the outlines and breakdowns you’ve put together.

This is going to be a brain storm session within the class period for each of you, and I want everyone participating to ask questions, and challenge the ad for it’s application, effectiveness, creativeness and overall advertising qualification. Basically, will it work? And how can you make it better?

Please come prepared with your advertising breakdowns and be ready to read. We have a lot to get through and I don’t want to waste time printing. This is also a graded assignment with points going toward the final project grade.

So thank you to everyone who participated in the class discussion yesterday, I very much appreciate those students who had something to say and chimed in…I definitely took notice Now, as we move into this project, there are going to be a number of individual assignments, and they will all have specific points assigned to them. That means, everything I assign counts towards the final project grade so you should all be checking the blog and coming to class prepared each day.For tomorrow, you will have the following:3x Advertisers (real)1x Advertiser (fake, serious)1x Advertiser (fake, your call…silly, fun, strange etc.) Along with each of the 5 advertisers you bring in, each will need to be broken down the way we had them yesterday. I want you to include: Advertiser, Product/sercive for sale, demo, who you’re selling to, why you’re selling it, where it’s being sold and an overall description of your spot to run. Each advertiser should cover a page at least. BE THOROUGH AND USE YOUR IMAGINATION.I want you to break these down like we did in class and tell me everything about the advertisers you’ve chosen. Remember…this is for credit. See y ou all tomorrow.

As was assigned the elements that Project #1 will consist of:

- Written script

 - Vocal recording must be featured throughtout the bit ll explain) - 5-7 minutes in length - 4 music beds-3-4 effects used (Prominent)  - 1-2 sound clips/actualities

all of this is due in class tomorrow and I will have a checklist for each of you to determine you have this work completed. Also, I will have a list on the board tomorrow for each of you to record your voiceover for the project. Please have your scripts typed and printed and practiced. You have a few weeks left until this project is due so I want to make sure you have plenty of time to produce it.

I will be in class tomorrow at 2pm so if you have any questions, please come in early and we can talk.

-Outline – in full and typed-Script – Full script written, 5-7 minutes in length (you will be recording Today)- a fewMusic Beds – Have them on CD, or in Mp3 form ready to upload into Audacity- Some Youtube links, sound bites, SFX, actualities, etc - Questions on ANYTHING pertaining to the project.I want each of you to spend at least 5 minutes in the recording booth on Thursday. It’s important to get off and running on this and the most important thing is going to be getting comfortable in the sound booth and hearing your own voice. Expect to record off of your script, so I’d like you to have it finished and printed prior to class. I’ll let the outlines finished in class on Tuesday slide but moving forward, things need to be completed before the 3pm class start.***Tip. I’d try to have the script finished much earlier than class, and practice on your own in private. Nothing is harder to do, even when it’s your writing, than a cold read and getting the feel for your script will allow you to knock it out quickly and make it sound good..
